Disney World's EPCOT Theme Park

EPCOT Florida Overview

Disney World Florida EPCOT

EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow) was to be Walt Disney's vision of a utopian future where work and leisure sat harmoniously along side one another. Conceived and planned by Walt but only completed after his death, EPCOT maintains some of the original concepts through the Technology Showcase, and adds to that the beauty and diversity of mankind through World Showcase.

EPCOT is enormous and can be considered as a theme park in two halves. The front part of the park, Technology Showcase features environmental and science based attractions exploring mankind's development and possible futures.

The stunningly beautiful World Showcase features pavilions from countries of the world set around the World Showcase lagoon. From a Mexican starlit night to the pagodas of China from the Eiffel Tower to exquisite Japanese restaurants World Showcase is a sensual treat in every way.

Car Parking & Monorail

The EPCOT car park is huge and as others split into themed areas. Take care as you park and make your way to the parking tram to note the name of your area and your row number. Trams will take you to the ticket and bag search center.

The monorail is also accessible from the ticket area with connections to some Disney hotels and Magic Kingdom, great if you are park hopping.

As you pass through the ticket center with the Geosphere of Spaceship earth in front, you are entering the first half of the park Technology Showcase. The attractions here are set out within and then to the left and right of Spaceship earth. Test Track Mission SPACE, Innovations and the other science based attractions are located to the left. SOARIN, The Seas with NEMO, Living with the Land and the environmental attractions are based to the right.

Technology Showcase covers a large area, with many of the attractions offering hands-on experiments and other educational tasks. It can take some time to get around, you can easily spend a whole day in just this part of the park.

Passing by the Geosphere until you reach the lagoon brings you to the start of World showcase. The various countries pavilions are set out around the lagoon with Italy directly opposite, Mexico first on the left and Canada First on the right. You can walk round either way, or hop on the ferry stopping at various locations.

As with Technology showcase World showcase is very large, whilst the path around the lake is only one mile long there are eleven country pavilions each packed with exhibits, rides and restaurants. It is very easy to spend an entire day just in World Showcase.

Eating OutEPCOT Teppan Edo

Most of the country pavilions feature at least one restaurant specialising in the food of the country, Mahi Mahi and Tacos de Ribeye in Mexico, Italy's La Bottega Italiana or maybe some Schnitzel from Germany. There are some great choices, making EPCOT a great destination for posh dinner out. If you are planning on watching the evening firework show then why not come into the park mid afternoon, wander World Showcase and have a leisurely evening diner before the show.

Teppan Edo in Japan takes it up another level offering an evenings entertainment along with dinner. Communal tables seating eight are attended by their own chef preparing and cooking in front of you with flamboyance and style.

The EPCOT restaurants get very busy and advance booking is recommended, you can do this online up to 180 days in advance, and whilst some bookings may require a credit card to guarantee all can be cancelled until a few days before hand.

IllumiNations Night Show

The EPCOT night firework show IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth is a must, a fantastic combination of music and fireworks that is one of the highlights on any Disney holiday. The show starts with an animated globe lighting up in the center of the lake, the globe is the center piece and features videos with lasers, fireworks and a fantastic sound track forming the back drop.

You can watch the show from anywhere around the lake, the globe, fireworks and music are on a grade scale, and central to the lake.

We have found that the balcony on the restaurants of Japan offers a good raised location to view the show from, best arrive around 30 minutes from the start to ensure a good spot.
